Avalanche Cup LYON 2010, win for Fabien Cousinié & 3rd for Florent PAYET
It was an amazing weekend at the Avalanche Cup of Lyon for the Blackmountain Morewood United team.

Since now 16 years, the Avalanche Cup of Lyon is one of the most famous race of Europe. Riders like Nicolas Vouilloz, Gee Atherthon, Steave Peat, Greg Minaar and Sam Hill previously participate to this mythical race in downtown Lyon.
This year, oversea riders weren’t there but Fabien Barel and Aurélien Giordanengo, winner of last year, were present.
After the encouraging results at Sea Otter Classic in California and the victory of Florent Payet at VoulVoul DH last weekend, the team was pumped up and they were ready to kill the track.
The weather was bad but the team was super motivated. The CEO of Blackmountain, Philippe LASALLA and Sébastien CIFUENTES (known as SEBY RIMOUSKI) rep of the famous snowscoot brand were there to help.
DH qualification :
Sunday morning, the top 100 riders were there to race the Super Cup with the goal to qualify in the first 32 to be part of the 4X.
The track was physical and sticky. Fabien Barel finished first with a chrono of 1 mn 27s 566, more than a second in front of Aurélien Giordanengo followed by our Florent Payet.
It was Flo’s best result on this track (he finished 16th before) which give us hope for this season!
On his side, Fabien was really tired from his final week at school and wasn’t woke up enough for his run ;-). He ended up in the wood which made him lose all hope for a podium.
Dissapointed by his DH, Fabien didnt lose his focuse for the best part coming : the 4X.

« The 4X »:
On a track that included pretty much all the DH trail, everybody was looking forward to the 4X.
Out of the 32 best riders qualified in the morning, the final was hosted by Fabien Cousinié, Florent Payet, Aurélien Giordanengo and Thibault Ruffin.
After the start, Florent took the lead in the first turn followed by Fabien, Aurélien Giordanengo and Thibault Ruffin. Florent got a problem with his chain and got passed by the 3 other riders. Fabien was able to dig a gap between him and the riders but Aurélien Giordanengo came back at the end because Fabien was closing the door at each corner. Fabien suffered two fierce attack by Aurélien in the last turns which brought Giordanengo to fall.
It’s after this final full of suprises that Fabien won the 4X.

The reaction of Fabien was : To win the Avalanche cup 4X in Lyon was for me a dream that became reality mainly after a week of hell and exams at school.
Since 2007 the 4X is the main event in LYON and I have been in the finals since then. I’m happy to win the title today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people that supported and helped me since all these years.

Un week exceptionnel pour Le Blackmountain Morewood United pour cette édition 2010 de l’ Avalanche Cup avec encore une victoire à la clé!!!

Florent et Fabien sont remontés à bloc pour préparer au mieux cette nouvelle saison. Aprés les résultats encourageant de la Sea Otter Classic en Californie et la victoire de Florent Payet à la Voulvoul DH le week end dernier, nous voilà sur la mythique colline Lyonnaise.
Le temps n’est malheureusement pas de la partie mais cela n’entame en rien le moral des troupes. Le PDG de Blackmountain, Philippe LASALLA, est présent ainsi que Sébastien CIFUENTES ( SEBY REMOUSKY ) de Blackmountain qui est venu prêter main forte à l’équipe!
La DH qualificative pour le 4X:
Dimanche matin, les 100 premiers riders font tourner le chrono pour la Super Cup avec pour objectif de finir dans les 32 premiers pour pouvoir se qualifier pour le 4X.
La piste est collante et très physique. Fabien Barel, en forme, signe le meilleur chrono en 1 mn 27s 566, plus d’une seconde d’avance sur Aurélien Giordanengo suivi sur la troisième marche du podium par notre Florent Payet qui réalise ici un exploit! Sa meilleure performance à l’Avalanche Cup était 16eme, de quoi nous donner vraiment beaucoup d’espoir pour le reste de la saison .
Fabien quant à lui, très fatigué de sa semaine d’examen, n’était pas vraiment bien réveillé pour ce run matinal et une sortie de piste dans le bois lui fit perdre tout espoir de podium.
Déçu de sa manche Fabien s’est vite reconcentré car il savait que le plus important restait à venir.

L’épreuve reine « le 4X »:
Sorte de bouquet final d’engagement et de spectacle, sur un tracé qui reprenait en partie celui de la DH, tout le monde attendait de pied ferme le 4 cross.
Les 32 meilleurs pilotes du matin étant qualifiés, on retrouve pour la finale Fabien Cousinié, Florent Payet, Aurélien Giordanengo et Thibault Ruffin.
Au prix d’un départ très disputé Florent prend le premier virage en tête suivi de près par Fabien , Aurélien Giordanengo et Thibault Ruffin. Florent rencontre des problèmes de chaîne et se fait passer par Fabien puis Aurelien et Thibault. Fabien creuse l’écart dans la première partie en sous bois mais à force de fermer les portes et couper tous les virages relevés pour controler sa première place Aurelien Giordanengo est revenu dans sa roue. Fabien subit 2 virulentes attaques d’Aurélien dans les derniers virages mais qui se soldent par un echec et une chute d’Aurelien. C’est donc logiquement que Fabien s’impose enfin dans cette épreuve sur le tracé Lyonnais de de La Sarra.

Fabien Cousinié, réaction à chaud : « Accrocher l’avalanche cup de Lyon à mon palmares et qui plus est le 4X c’est comme un rêve qui devient réalité, surtout vu la semaine difficile que j’ai passé avec mes examens. Depuis 2007 le 4X est l’épreuve reine de LYON et depuis, je suis en finale du 4X chaque année. Mais il me manquait ce titre, maintenant c’est chose faite. J’en profite pour remercier toutes les personnes qui m’ont soutenue et aidé de près ou de loin depuis toutes ces années . »

As strange as it may sound, the lack of pressure on riders at events like these often brings out the best in the field as nobody is concerned about the points race of the World Cups, and for many younger, less experienced riders this gives them a great, low-pressure platform to prove themselves against some of the best in the World.
